Camping in Akagera
There are four campsites in Akagera, all of which offer basic facilities for overnight park stays, as well as wonderful wildlife experiences
Welcome to Akagera Campsites
Muyumbu and Shakani campsites are both located in the south of the park, while Mutumba and Mihindi lie further north.
Muyumbu is situated high on a ridge overlooking Lake Ihema with Tanzania to the east; the camp is a spectacular backdrop for the rising sun.
Shakani, located on the edge of picturesque Lake Shakani, offers a lakeshore camping experience, where travellers wake up to birdsong and the distinct grunt of nearby hippos. Shakani is the only campsite with running water, and its ablution block has flushing toilets and solar-heated showers.
Mutumba is the most remote campsite, located further north in the game-rich and scenic high-rolling grassland Mutumba Hills. This is the highest point in the park and evenings can be cool and breezy.
Mihindi Campsite and Café lies in the northern sector. The old research house has been converted into a coffee shop and there is also a picnic area for day visitors.
Experiences
Night Drives
Night drives are available for guests staying overnight. The sunset departure is an ideal way to end your day and are your best chance of seeing nocturnal wildlife. The safari vehicle, with pop-up rooftop, can take seven guests.
Boat trips on Lake Ihema
A boat trip on Lake Ihema is wildlife and bird viewing from a different point of view. Trips are scheduled at 7.30am, 9am, 3pm and 4.30pm. Private trips can also be arranged at other times.
Community Cultural Experiences
Community Freelance Guides share cultural experiences, such as visiting a dairy farm – to learn about traditions around cattle and milk in Rwanda’s Eastern Province – a banana-beer maker, or a honey cooperative. Revenue is shared with the community members visited.
Behind-the-Scenes visits of Park HQ
For more insight into Akagera, take a tour of Park HQ, meet the people and learn about their incredible conservation work. This activity is ideal for educational groups, or special interest travellers but open to all (minimum numbers apply).
Guided Game Drives
Self-drivers can be accompanied by a Community Guide on a game drive. Overnight guests can book drives led by freelance guides at Reception
Akagera Campsite Details
- Muyumba and Mutumba: Low-lying electric fence surrounding campsites to protect against hippos and other animals; pit latrines; underground harvested rain-water reserve; open-sided communal rondavel shelter; barbecue facilities
- Shakani: Low-lying stone wall surrounding the campsite; ablution block with flush toilets and solar-heated showers; two rondavels with woodfired barbecue facilities.
- Mihindi: Low-lying electric fence around the campsite to deter hippos and other mammals ; ablution block with flush toilets and solar-heated showers; barbecue facilities
Tents are available for hire at Reception for the southern sites only; firewood is provided onsite. Visitors are asked to bring their own camping equipment and supplies.
